Do I Need to Use White Bread?

No, you do not need to use white bread. One of the great things about this recipe is its versatility. Feel free to substitute whole wheat bread. A special occasion? Use a thick-sliced challah bread or brioche. Almost any bread will work for this recipe. The only caveat is the thicker the bread is sliced the longer you should allow the bread to soak in your egg mixture.

My Bread has Gone Stale. Can I Still Use It?

YES! In fact the staler the bread, the better the french toast. If your bread is stale you are in luck however, just make sure the bread hasn’t gone moldy and you are good to go. Can I still use fresh bread? Absolutely. If your bread is fresh, just dredge for less time in the egg mixture. Just keep in mind, if the bread is stale it may need a hair longer in the egg mixture.

Fun fact. French toast actually originated in France. Shocker, right? In France it is called “pain perdu” which translates to “lost bread” because they use leftover stale bread to make it.

How Can I Dress Up Quick and Easy French Toast for a Special Occasion?

The easiest way to dress up your quick and easy french toast is with toppings. Top your easy french toast with sliced strawberries or bananas or walnuts. Chocolate chips and whipped cream. Get crazy. Play around with different topping combinations.

Make a topping bar. Have fun. The real question is why wait for a special occasion to dress up your french toast? Life is short. Have fully loaded french toast on a Tuesday!
