The word “pesto” comes from the Italian word “pestare” which means to crush or pound. This is because the mortar and pestle were used to pound the ingredients. But nowadays, we have the electric blenders, mini crushers or food processor to do the work. Pesto is usually made with garlic, basil, crushed pine nuts, Parmigiano-Reggiano and olive oil. However, through the years, people have made different variations making different flavors to suite the occasion.
This easy pesto recipe below is a classic one.
- 50 grams Parmesan Cheese
- 50 grams Pine Nuts
- 150ml Olive Oil
- 80 grams Basil
- 2 Garlic Cloves
Cook the pine nuts using a small frying pan in low heat until golden brown.
Put the nuts in a food processor together with the Parmesan, garlic cloves, olive oil and basil. Blend this until it looks smooth.
Place the mixture on a serving dish or a glass container.
