How To Make Homemade Hot Chocolate
Here’s my take on homemade hot chocolate that’s totally comforting, totally delish, and totally hygge.
Kitchen Tools Needed
All the exact amounts you need are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. First, here is a quick list of what you need to get from the store.
- Milk chocolate chips
- Cocoa powder
- Condensed milk
- Marshmallows for topping
How To Melt Chocolate Chips
I’ve heard of people melting chocolate chips in the microwave, but that isn’t the best way. The best way is to use a double broiler.
If you don’t have a double broiler, then melt the chocolate chips over low heat so they don’t scald – and keep stirring constantly too.
Make It Keto-Friendly
This is really easy to make sugar-free and keto-friendly. All you have to do is use evaporated milk instead of condensed milk. Then, use Lily’s dark chocolate chips. They are sugar-free and fit perfectly in a keto lifestyle.
The best thing about this recipe is that you don’t have to pour it over milk since you are mixing the milk into the saucepan.
Optional Fun Toppings
Have fun with your hot cocoa! Add your favorite mix-ins or toppings. Here are a few ideas if you need them.
- Sprinkle Cinnamon on top
- Whipped Cream
- Chocolate Shavings
- Colored Sugar
- Caramel Drizzle
How To Give It As A Foodie Gift
If you want to give this as a foodie gift, then put together a gift basket with the following items:
- This recipe printed on cardstock
- Cute Mug
- Can of Condensed Milk
- Cocoa Powder in a small mason jar
- Milk Chocolate Chips
That’s it! It makes a really thoughtful homemade gift. Homemade hot chocolate gift baskets are very popular and anyone that loves chocolate will enjoy this gift.
Lisa’s Ultra-Fab Homemade Hot Chocolate
- Small Saucepan
- 1.5 cups milk
- ¼ cup chocolate chips
- ½ tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp condensed milk

- In a small saucepan, start whisking milk and chocolate chips over medium heat. Whisk until the chocolate chips have completely melted.
- Add cocoa powder and whisk. Put down the heat to low and stir in condensed milk.
- Remove from heat and cool until it’s at the desired temperature (because it’ll be really hot!)
- Pour into your favorite mug and top with some miniature marshmallows.
