Easy Homemade Chicken Gravy

Sure, buying store-bought gravy saves you a bit of time, but it’s usually either too salty or just plain bland. Making things at home gives you control! And this gravy is as spicy and flavorful as you want it to be.

This is a very basic chicken gravy recipe, so I’ll include different ways you can change it to make it fit your diet or nutritional needs.

How To Make Chicken Gravy

All you need is a hot skillet, a whisk, and a few simple ingredients to make the tastiest chicken gravy you’ve ever made!

Make The Roux

Have you ever heard of those fancy recipes that require a roux and you told yourself, “How fancy! I could never do that!”

Well, guess what? If you follow the first steps of this recipe, then you’ll have made a roux!

Making a roux is not as complicated as it seems and is definitely a requirement for this gravy to get its amazing texture.

What is a roux? It’s a combination of butter and flour that thickens gravies and sauces. You can also make a roux with water and cornstarch.

Use A Whisk

Using a whisk is key to make sure you get the right consistency. Flat whisks are great for roux/gravy, but a traditional balloon whisk works just as well.

Whisk Frequently

It will feel like all you’re doing is stirring, but that’s how to get a smooth gravy. Slowly add the chicken broth and whisk it constantly. You need to completely distribute that amazing roux into the chicken broth so that it thickens without lumps.

Dice Onion Into Small Bits

The onion pieces should be almost invisible in the gravy. If you don’t like the texture of onions, you can replace them with onion powder, instead.

How To Use Chicken Gravy

This is an all-purpose gravy that tastes amazing on top of any type of baked, fried, or cooked chicken. And you don’t have to stop at chicken! Add it on top of roasted veggies or pork, too.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to use chicken gravy.

Recipe Questions

What’s The Difference Between Chicken Broth and Chicken Stock?

The biggest difference is how they are made. Chicken stock is made by boiling bones with aromatic vegetables in water. Chicken broth is usually made by boiling chicken skin with veggies and water.

For this reason, many health-conscious people prefer stock over broth.

Can I Use A Bouillion Cube To Make Chicken Broth?

Yes, you can make chicken-flavored broth at home with a bouillon cube and water. Follow the directions on the package. Just remember that this method will be higher in sodium.

Can You Freeze Chicken Gravy?

Yes, you can freeze chicken gravy. My favorite way to freeze chicken gravy is to pour it into an ice cube tray. The only downside to freezing gravy is that it won’t be as thick or creamy when you thaw it and heat it back up.
